Conan O'Brien Could Leave NBC
Reported by the NY Daily Post:
"In the wake of news that Jay Leno will return to his 11:30 p.m. time slot, possibly as soon as the Winter Olympics wrap up on February 28, NBC has given O'Brien the option of jumping ship and signing on with another network, TMZ.com reports.
Network executives will let O'Brien weigh other offers and decide whether he will move back to midnight, or move on, according to the Web site.
Under the terms of his contract, NBC could block O'Brien from switching allegiances, but they have decided to give him the choice.
The report is in contrast to an official statement released by NBC Thursday night, which expressed the network's commitment "to keeping Conan O'Brien on NBC. He is a valued part of our late-night lineup, as he has been for more than 16 years and is one of the most respected entertainers on television."
Should he decide to leave, besides reverberating around the wider world of TV, "Conan's Choice" will have major implications for Jay Leno's return to 11:30.
Should Conan stay, his show will be an hour, and Leno will get only a half-hour slot. But if Conan kicks NBC to the curb, viewers will get a full 60 minutes of "Jaywalking" and Leno's other signature shtick."
